Suddenly Sitting

So, on Friday, Baby J and I were sitting in his room playing with his aquarium toy. I have to be careful to word that correctly because I keep saying things like, "so, today Baby J was in the aquarium," to my mother, who responds with things like, "you put Baby J in the aquarium??? With the fish???" (Even though we haven't actually resurrected Freckles' old aquarium left over from his single days. I hate cleaning up fish tanks and have been pretty blatantly changing the subject whenever Freckles mentions fixing it up.)

Anyway.

Baby J and I were playing with the aquarium.

I have been trying to get him to do more tummy time, in this frantic attempt to make sure that he gets enough upper-body strength after reading some horrible paranoid article somewhere. He's kind of good at it. If you show him photos of babies pushing up on their hands, he actually seems sort of inspired and does it himself while smiling at the baby in the photo. (Mental note: throw away photos of children doing anything I deem inappropriate -- like playing football or riding motorcycles -- before he's big enough to see them.)

But Baby J actually isn't that into tummy time. He'll do it for a little while, but then he decides he's over it and flips over.

Recently, I've been sitting him up so he can play with the hanging plastic fish on the aquarium from a different perspective. I usually hold him up with my hand or sit behind him, crooning sweet nothings things like, "do you see the fishes? Aren't they pretty? Why did that one eat a starfish? Oh, you want to hit them together? Take that fishes!"

And then, on Friday, I realized that he was totally sitting up on his own and didn't actually need any support.

We'd been flirting with unsupported sitting for a while -- prior to Friday (by prior, I mean as recently as Thursday night) he could sit unsupported for around 30 seconds, and would then tip amiably over.

But then on Friday, he sat unsupported for 30 minutes at a stretch, multiple times throughout the day.

When Freckles came home, I showed him.

"Wow, Baby J," he said, "you can sit."

No one we told was as impressed as we were.

Whatever.

He could still do it on Saturday and Sunday and Monday. He's still doing it today.

I'm sort of at a loss here.

Oh, and also? Evidently a distaste for rice cereal does not mean that he doesn't like other things. For instance: zucchini, which he gobbled up this morning even though he didn't seem very hungry.
