Something In the Air

From my regular blog at http://www.plasticsnappythings.blogspot.com

Baby J leaned back flamboyantly in his Baby Einstein command center and unleashed a satisfying-sounding yawn. As his head tilted to face the ceiling, I could count the white slits of teeth along his top gumline.

He pushed himself upright again and looked at me.

"Are you tired?" I asked, hopefully.

He smiled.

And then he continued to jump up and down, merrily banging away on the gentle forest creatures that encompassed the command center's garden theme. (I always hated you, plastic caterpillar! You had it coming, Mr. Sunshine!)

Such is life.

I keep telling myself that someday this refusal-to-nap-in-the-crib thing will go the way of The Amazing Story of the Baby Who Would Not Eat Solid foods, or The Baby Who Hated Bathtime.

But so far it hasn't.

I actually don't know why I let it frustrate me as much as I do. I mean, I give him plenty of opportunities to sleep -- he just doesn't like my chosen venue. Eventually, I keep thinking, he will sleep. And not just at night.

And there will be peace in the house, at least until I find something else to obsess over.

We just quite aren't there yet.

But maybe almost. This afternoon, on my run, I noticed that the sky looks like it did in the summer. (True confession: I hate Merced in the summer. I hate the heat. I hate the air quality. I hate not being able to walk or run because of the heat and the air quality. I spend most summers plotting other places to be.)

Last summer, Baby J was a newborn, and the air quality got so bad that the air looked like fog, only it was made up of soot and unhealthy particles.

The idea that he might get asthma or breathing issues just from being a kid and playing outside kills me.

So I have abundant hope that when the sleep issues pass, there will be a myriad of other things for me to worry about.

Cheers to that.
